Midwood Goes Gourmet

Saturday August 23, 2008

Has anyone been to the new grocery mega-store that opened last week in Midwood?

The supermarket, Pomegranate, contains 20,000 (!) square feet of shopping space, all of which is devoted to organic, kosher-certified food. The Brooklyn Eagle reports that the new store offers everything from just-baked challah to gourmet cheeses and even a selection of sushi. The store's slogan, in fact, is "Everything. Better." What do you think?

Pomegranate's website is still in the works, but you can get more information about the store by calling (718) 951-7112. Pomegranate is located at 1507 Coney Island Avenue in Midwood, Brooklyn.

I was there. It’s bigger than most of the other kosher markets in the area, but the aisles stock the usual kosher brands (not organic). They do have a nice selection of meat, fish and cheese. But the bakery has a lot of artificially flavored cakes and cookies. The frosting is the usual whipped shortning type (yuch). It is far from being an all-organic product store.

All the news reports about this place have been very misleading, most likely fed by Pomegranate’s own press releases. There is nothing about this place comparable to Whole Foods and it isn’t much larger than the bigger grocery stores in the city. Its products are more comparable to C-Town, Associated and Gristedes than they are to Whole Foods, except it has the standard generic kosher brands found in other kosher grocery stores. But I was definitely disappointed by the fruit, cheese and bakery offerings which were just average.

The big grocery store at 15th Street and Kings Highway just re-opened as a kosher grocery store and its size is about the same as Pomegranate (if not bigger) and I liked it a lot better.
