It's the last day of a NY summer, really. Head to the beach, they close tonight until 2012. Or, head to the incredible, joyous, noisy, food-filled, costume-bedecked West Indian parade happening now until about 6pm tonight down Eastern Parkway. At 10 am the set up was already in full swing, with hundreds of vendors, some from as far away as Virginia, cooking pork chops and fried chicken and greens, selling sorrel and ginger drinks, and lots of flags, Carib-proud t-shirts and baubles. People were dancing in the streets, before the floats and steel bands even showed up! BRING WATER, SUNSCREEN, HAT & STREET SMARTS. IT'S HOT AND VERY CROWDED AT THE PARADE.
