Brooklyn Sandy News: Oh Dear, Not the NY Aquarium! Coney Island Favorite "Severely Flooded" in Hurricane Sandy

By October 30, 2012

Follow me on:

I just received this unhappy news:

"The Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium, located in an evacuation zone in Coney Island, experienced severe flooding from the storm surge associated with Hurricane Sandy.  The entire 14-acre facility was under water. As the water recedes, we will need time to assess the full extent of the damage. "

The Aquarium staff stayed through the storm to do what they could. It must have been awful.  The fish must have been confused.

And the Aquarium is such a wonderful place, recently renovated. They were hosting the cutest-ever "Ascarium at the Aquarium" event, free for little kids in costume,  just last weekend.

No news yet on Luna Park, MCU Stadium, the Boardwalk.

Prospect Park Zoo, also managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, was not damaged. The NY Aquarium will be closed until further notice. Stay tuned for updates.

Hope that all the animals are ok. I wonder how high the water got up there and if the power outage damaged any habitats.

I dont know but i am sure they would appreciate even the smallest donation. I Imagine that some habitats , outdoors, must have been ruined. Its very close to the ocean.
. And the staff there is not huge, but is dedicated. So they coukd use the support. Sad.
