Hot of the press from NYC.gov:
Mayor Bloomberg signed an emergency order to use the " odd-even" license plate system for buying gasoline and diesel, effective at 6 AM tomorrow, Friday for at least five days or until further notice. Good news: it might shorten the lines. Bad news: things aren't yet back to normal. The order refers to passenger automobiles and retail gas stations, not emergency vehicles and buses.
How it works:
- If your license plate ends in an odd number (1,3,5,7,9) then you can only buy gas on days that end in an any odd number. If your license plate ends in an even number (2,4,6,8,0) then you can only buy gas on days that end in any even number.
- If your license plate ends in a letter, or any other character, then consider that an "odd number."
- Commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, buses and paratransit vehicles, Medical Doctor (MD) plates and vehicles licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission are exempt.
Bottom line: fuel up only when necessary and use mass transit.
