A Growing Number of Small Non-Chain Hotels

By , About.com Guide

Brooklyn's experiencing a boomlet in hotels. And, sandwiched in-between the predictable chain hotels in Brooklyn and the borough's dozen or more bed and breakfasts are a handful of small hotels.

1. Nu Hotel in Boerum Hill

Location, location, location. Opened in 2008, the Nu Hotel is located on one of Brooklyn's most popular restaurant and shopping strips, Smith Street. It's located in the neighborhood of Carroll Gardens, within walking distance of Brooklyn Heights and many convenient subway stops.

In terms of decor, the hotel promises a touch of hip—you can get a hammock in your room, as seen on the hotel's website.

Ask for discounts, especially if you've been referred by a local.

2. Hotel Le Bleu in Park Slope

Owned by Globiwest Hospitality Group, the same management company as Hotel Le Jolie in Williamsburg, Hotel Le Bleu straddles the neighborhoods of Gowanus and Park Slope. It is one of a half-dozen small hotels (including some brand name chain hotels) that have cropped up along semi-industrial Fourth Avenue.

In the summertime, the rooftop of this hotel has a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline.

Rumor has it that the Beach Boys stayed at Hotel Le Bleu when playing Brooklyn.
