On April 20, 2011, Coney Island underwent a historic change. Known for decades for its historic wood framed Cyclone roller coaster, Coney suddenly became home to not one, but three roller coaster rides.

After years of controversy over the future of Coney Island, the development company Central Amusement International opened a three acre "Scream Zone" on the Boardwalk side of the historic amusement park. The new roller coasters are within a five minute walk of the Cyclone. In fact, riders of one will be able to see (and wave to) riders of the others.

The Wall Street Journal's Joseph De Avila reported in an article titled Ups and Downs Coming that Valerio Ferrari, president Central Amusement International, said the Scream Zone's goal is to " push the envelope of the roller coaster experience in Coney Island."
