The Grand Army Plaza "Food Truck Rally" refers to a gathering of food vendors selling gourmet specialty foods for instance, ice cream or lobster rolls or freshly made tacos or muffins — from colorfully painted trucks which are temporarily parked for a few hours in a public space near the entrance to Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
After the event is over, these little vendors on wheels just drive away and appear at another location somewhere in Brooklyn or New York City.
Most of the food trucks that participate in the Prospect Park Food Truck Rally are mom-and-pop operations. Some are associated with restaurants. Others operate only as mobile food stands.
Many are favorite lunchtime destinations, parked during the work week at popular Manhattan and Brooklyn corners. For instance, a food truck selling D's Grub that participates in the Sunday Food Truck Rally in Brooklyn is often found during the week at the centrally located corner of 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue, in midtown Manhattan.
Many vendors have won bragging credits. For instance, Kelvin Slushies won the Vendy Award for Best Dessert, and appear on such lists as America’s Top 20 Food Trucks by QSR Magazine,America’s Top 15 Street Food Vendors by Relish.com and Best NYC Food Truck in the About.com Reader’s Choice Awards.
