1. Thur-Mon, Sept 2: Labor Day West Indian American Day Carnival: SEE SCHEDULE

Don't miss this major New York City parade!  Preceeded by days of pre-events, including a viewing of the steel drums  held at the Brooklyn Museum,  the actual parade itself is held on Labor Day Monday. It takes place on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn.

You won't soon forget the costumes and marchers wearing extravagant feathered head dresses, floats, marching bands, steel band music, vendors selling roti and other local street food, live performers up and down Eastern Parkway. It's drawn up to two million visitors. 

2. Wed Aug 28- Sun Sept 1 : BargeMusic 4 Day Labor Day Festival

This annual Labor Day Music event has something for everyone. Called the Here and Now Labor Day Festival, it's an inventive musical collage. It lasts 4 days, but get your tix in advance. Memorable. See the program here. Get Tickets are $35 and under..

4. Mon Sept 2: Free Habana Outpost Back-to-School Bash for Kids & Families

Part restaurant, part community cultural hub, Habana Outpost is holding its annual Back To School Bash for kids and families. Fun for all! Here's how they describe it, "6th Annual Back To School Bash, September 2nd, 2013 (11am – 3pm) @ Habana Outpost! The day will be filled with a ton of free supplies that we will be giving away including notebooks, backpacks, pencils & rulers just in time for the kick off of the new school year!" Sponsors include Alvin Ailey, BAM, NY K!ds, The Brooklyn Public Library, Happy Family" and more.

6. Beach Campfire at Jamaica Bay (Free)

This is wonderful fun! The annual Beach Campfire that's often held in Jamaica Bay this year will be at Jacob Riis Park, Queens Boardwalk and Beach 169 Street Friday, August 30 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Bring fixings for s’mores, and take part in the sing - along! Bring a chair, or blanket. Sorry, Brooklyn. Yes, it's in Queens. (Sorry!)
