June 30 - July4 2012 International African Festival
Brooklyn's African American culture and communities are among the most vibrant and active in the nation. This annual July 4th weekend festival is dedicated to "the preservation of art forms, traditions, and cultures of Africa and its diaspora." You can attend music and dance performances, spoken word events, fashion shows and an arts and crafts market. Don't worry about lunch or dinner, you can find Brooklyn style soul food, Caribbean specialties, and also various Latin, African and vegetarian dishes. In the past, such artists as The Mighty Sparrow, Fela Anikaputi, KRS-1 and Lauren Hill have performed here. Begun as a neighborhood fundraiser in 1971, the International African Arts Festival has grown into a full fledged, weekend-long July Fourth weekend event attended by an estimated 75,000 people from New York City and around the world.What's in the African Marketplace?
Don't miss the African Marketplace, featuring hundreds of vendors, and food court at this community based cultural festival. Look for hand made jewelry, fabrics, clothing. Shoppers can find info on original paintings and artwork, sculpture and even furniture.- Where: Commodore Barry Park, Navy Street, between Park and Flushing Avenues, on the border between Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene
