July 4th in Brooklyn - 4th of July Calendar of Events

Isaac Mizrachi with a hot pink "Pop Up Piano," was one of numerous luminaries who participated in the Sing for Hope 2011 campaign; 88 decorated pianos were placed in parks across NY and Brooklyn for two weeks.

Note: Alas! This program did not continue in 2012.

(In the hopes that this program will return for Independence DaY 2013, here's a brief account of the Pop Up Piano program in 2011:
On July 2nd, 2011, dozens of pianos in a Brooklyn park, free for all to use, any time of day, were available in Brooklyn parks and public spaces, part of a public two-week arts project called Pop Up Pianos, sponsored by the non-profit Sing for Hope. Pianos were tucked away in Prospect Park, Fort Greene Park, DUMBO, Bay Ridge, Bushwick, Williamsburg: baby grands and uprights. All were decorated, by notables such as Spade and Diane von Furstenberg and by community groups, a tatoo artist from Carroll Gardens, and students from Bushwick High School for Social Justice. There were cheerful orange pianos and pianos plastered over with old letters and envelopes with ancient stamps. The pianos were donated to the under-resourced communities, hospitals and schools.)
