Free Help with Taxes and IRS Issues in Brooklyn

For late filers, first time filers and others, Brooklyn offers some good free resources to understanding how and when to file federal, state and local taxes.  Brooklyn, NY residents can get free help with filing returns with the IRS at several different locations.

 

1. Brooklyn IRS Office

The IRS has a free Taxpayer Assistance Center that operates out of the Brooklyn office of the Internal Revenue Service. It's moved; find out where it is located today.

2. Brooklyn Public Library - Various Branches

The Brooklyn Public library offers several kinds of help for individual and business tax filers.  During tax season, the BPL often hosts meetings organized by such entities as AARP at the Central Library in Park Slope and in a limited number of branch libraries.

For general information: (718) 230-2100/ Prepare your taxes online at the library with help from a tax assistant.To use this FREE program, you must:

  • earn less than $52,000 (per tax return)
  • have a valid e-mail address and basic computer skills
  • bring all your relevant tax documents to the site

When: January 27-April 14, 2014.

Mondays: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM (except 2/17)
Wednesdays: 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Fridays: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Sundays: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Saturdays: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Where: New Lots Library – January 27-April 15, 2014

When: Mondays: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM (except 2/17)
Tuesdays: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM

3. Brooklyn Public Business Library

Trained business librarians can help visitors find relevant information about federal, state and local taxes. However, they cannot assist with individual cases.

Where: Business and Career Library 80 Cadman Plaza West at Tillary Street in Brooklyn Heights. Criteria:

  • earn less than $52,000 (per tax return)
  • have a valid e-mail address and basic computer skills
  • bring all your relevant tax documents to the site
 

When: January 28-April 15, 2014
