Christmas Concerts in Brooklyn: Bach, Messiah & More

If you know where to go, you can find wonderful musical offerings during the month of December in Brooklyn. Here are a few, ranging from a festive multicultural holiday concert at Bargemusic, to performances by the acclaimed Brooklyn Youth Chorus, to community Christmas caroling.

1. Monday December 19: Kwanzaa Celebration at LIU's Kumble Theater (Downtown)

Have a Kwanzaa musical experience, with dance, acoustic percussion, and song in an interactive celebration of Kwanzaa.

2. December 20: Brooklyn Tabernacle Spectacular

See the Brooklyn Tabernacle show, "It’s Christmas Once again," a megawatt, faith-filled production enlivened with music, dancing and dramatizations.

5. PAST EVENT - Wednesday December 14: Brooklyn Philharmonic Plays Carnegie Hall

New York Choral Society conductor John Daly Goodwin leads both the choir and the Brooklyn Philharmonic in pieces by Haydn’s Te Deum, Poulen, Verdi’s and more.

6. PAST EVENT - Weekend of December 15-17: Brooklyn Youth Chorus

The acclaimed Brooklyn Youth Chorus is holding four concerts, three in Brooklyn and one at the World Financial Center.

1. Twentieth anniversary season concert featuring the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon piece for soprano and chorus based on I Dream A World, a poem by Langston Hughes.

2. Friday, December 16 at 2 P.M. BYC's youngest singers present new and traditional arrangements of holiday favorites and selections by Coulais, Dalglish, Yon and Raposo.

3. The Brooklyn Youth Chorus' Senior Chorus and Intermediate Chorus sing Britten's Ceremony of Carols and Vivaldi's Esurientes from Magnificat, plus unique holiday arrangements of Carol of the Bells, S'Vivon and more.

4. The grand finale will be the BYO's full Concert Chorus and Young Men's Ensemble with special guest opera singer Harolyn Blackwell for a traditional holiday concert including works by Britten, Monteverdi, Vaughan Williams, Kesselman, Berkey and Bestor.

7. PAST EVENT - Jingle Bell Jamboree (Park Slope)

Get in the act!Holiday music doesn't have to be a professional concert! Join the fun at this annual Park Slope event, a two hour sing-along.
  • Where: 274 Garfield Place in Park Slope.
  • When: December 17, 7-9 P.M.
  • Admission: Suggested donation of $5 or $10.
Have fun at this annual community sing along, featuring the Brooklyn Community Chorus, MS 51 Show Choir, the Brooklyn High School of the Arts Performing Choir, and the Festive Sing-A-Long.

This year it's being held at Beth Elohim, due to construction issues at the church.

Sponsored by Park Slope Civic Council, Park Slope Parents, Old First Reformed Church, and Congregation Beth Elohim, all proceeds go towards expenses and to the non-profit arts organizations participating in the concert that provide services to our community.

8. Christmas Eve Concert: Bach Goldberg Variations

  • Where: Bargemusic, BargeMusic, at Fulton Street and East River, near Brooklyn Bridge Park, in DUMBO
  • When: Saturday, December 24, 8 P.M.
  • Admission: $75 prepaid. Includes complimentary sparkling cider, cookies, and chocolate.

9. PAST EVENT: Holiday Music at BargeMusic

Enjoy the Holiday Light: Joyous Music for the Holidays concert. There will be both Chanukkah and Christmas music: "Medieval carols, Sephardic Songs, Renaissance polyphony, festive folk songs from Yiddish, Hebrew and Appalachian folks traditions," according to the press materials, and also contemporary holiday music.

11. PAST EVENT — Saturday December 3: Medieval Music at Brooklyn Historical Society

Attend a musical performance that will transport you back in time. It's a French program by a group called BaroQue Across the River.
  • Where: Brooklyn Historical Society on Pierrepont Street, corner Clinton Street, in Brooklyn Heights
  • When: Saturday December 3
  • Admission: Tickets $20/$15 BHS members. Includes reception following the concert.
