Guide Review

Ambiance

Spuyten Duyvil has a decidedly home-y vibe to it. The interior looks like an old general store, and the pickled eggs on the counter and chalkboards only reinforce the antique atmosphere. The anatomy posters that hang from the walls add an air of eccentricity. On the weekends the interior space can get crowded, as the bar itself is very narrow and there aren't many places to stand around. But the atmosphere at Spuyten Duyvil on a slower weeknight is quintessentially Brooklyn, with its locally-owned, specialty brand and laid-back patrons.

The best time to go to Spuyten Duyvil is during the summer so you can experience their beautiful (and fairly large) outdoor garden. The ground is covered in gravel and there are plenty of tables. There's no table service, but you probably need the exercise, anyway. People do smoke outside so stay indoors if it bothers you. Sit under the trees and imagine for a moment that you're far away from the hustle bustle of the city.

Drinks

This bar specializes in European beers (especially Belgian), so skip it if you're in the mood for a Bud Light. But if the idea of drinking a rare bottle from the Alps is your thing, Spuyten Duyvil is for you. The chalkboards above the bar list what's available (an astounding 140 different bottles) and there are also draught beers. There are a few bottles of wine and exotic things like cask beer and mead. (Note: mead, also known as "honey wine" is made by fermenting water and honey.) If you have a friend or loved one who's a beer connoisseur, Spuyten Duyvil is definitely the bar to impress him or her.

Food

There are only snacks available, but good ones nonetheless: meat, cheese and chocolate plates, pickles, or pickled eggs.

FYI

Spuyten Duyvil accepts credit cards.

Nearby

If the scene at Spuyten Duyvil is too serene for you, head across the street to The Commodore, one of Williamsburg's most popular bars, known for their variety of cocktails and insanely good fried chicken. Or, if you're looking for somewhere to eat, Walter Foods (up Havemeyer and right on Grand St.) has one of the best burgers in Brooklyn.
