Question: Getting From Brooklyn to Governors Island: When and Where Can One Get the Ferry?
One of the most popular outings in New York City is a trip to Governors Island, a 170-acre site originally developed and used for over 200 years for military training purposes, and long abandoned until its re-opening several years ago. It offers miles of biking and walking opportunities, interesting buildings, extraordinary views of New York City, New York Harbor, the Brooklyn Bridge and more. Mixing an eerie sense of history with an exciting sense of future possibilities, the island is slowly being repurposed for the 21st century.
Answer: You can catch a free ferry to airy, interesting and car-free Governors Island from the Fulton Ferry Landing in DUMBO every weekend and all holiday Mondays from Memorial Day weekend through September 25th, 2011.
The boats run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last ferry returning to Brooklyn is at 7 p.m. The ferries run every ten or fifteen minutes.
Take a bike (or rent one on the island) and explore the 170-some acres of this historic site.
