Five Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Brooklyn

By Kristen Goode, About.com

Looking for a bit o' fun this St. Patrick's Day? Be sure not to miss these Irish-centric happenings, which range from Brooklyn's annual St. Patrick's Day parade (a festive event that even the littlest leprechauns will love) to pub parties at local Irish haunts.

1. Watch Brooklyn's St. Patrick's Day parade.

Expect to see everything from bagpipes to marching bands at Brooklyn's annual St. Patrick's Day parade, which is held this year on Sunday, March 15. The parade will make its way through Park Slope and begins and ends at Prospect Park West and 15th Street.

2. Go pub hopping.

Brooklyn boasts dozens and dozens of Irish pubs. In fact, there's probably one in your neighborhood! In Bay Ridge, try your luck at Fitzpatrick's Cafe at 86-22 3rd Avenue. If you're in Windsor Terrace, don't miss the legendary Farrell's Bar & Grill at 215 Prospect Park West, where you'll without a doubt find some rowdy Irish fun. In Red Hook, there's Rocky Sullivan's (see below), and in Williamsburg, try Spike Hill (see below).

3. Feast on your favorite Irish foods.

While you're hitting your favorite Irish pubs, why not include a few that will be serving food? At the Brazen Head at 228 Atlantic Avenue, Irish music will be accompanied by $5 Guinness and free corned beef sandwiches from 4pm to 8pm. Or make your way to Spike Hill at 185 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg for everything from a traditional Irish breakfast to corned beef and cabbage. Looking for more pub food? Try one of these picks.

4. Take a historic Irish walking tour.

This event doesn't take place in Brooklyn, but you can celebrate the city's Irish past with a walking tour through the former "Little Ireland" section of the Lower East Side in Manhattan. The Irish walk begins at 1pm on Saturday, March 14. Meet in front of St. Paul's Chapel, at Broadway between Fulton and Vesey Streets. For more information, call Big Onion Walking Tours at (212) 439-1090.

5. Listen to some Irish tunes.

Rocky Sullivan's in Red Hook offers up an Irish brunch every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. Visit the Irish bar on Sunday, March 14 for some fare, and stick around for a special St. Patrick's Day concert by Seanchaí and the Unity Squad. Rocky Sullivan's is located at 34 Van Dyke Street (at Dwight).
