Even though the Macy's fireworks extravaganza has been moved from the East River, there are still plenty of ways to have fun in Brooklyn this Fourth of July. Show your patriotic colors at the annual Independence Day Parade, cheer on your favorite hot dog devouring pro at the famed Nathan's hot dog eating contest in Coney Island, or get your groove on at the Brooklyn Museum.
1. Hot Dog Mania

Photo © Audrey SelThis year marks the 94th annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest (in 2008, current hot dog champion and "Mustard Yellow Belt" holder Joey Chestnut scarfed down 59 hotdogs in 10 minutes). Want to watch the eaters in action? The competition is world-famous, so expect to fight the crowds to get a good view. Festivities start at noon in
Coney Island, at the intersection of Surf Avenue and Stillwell Avenue.
2. A Patriotic Parade
Expect to see plenty of red, white, and blue at this year's annual Brooklyn Independence Day Parade, which boasts marching bands, drummers, the Knights of Columbus, a ceremonial flag presentation, and more. The 2009 parade takes place on Saturday, June 29 at 12pm and will run along 13th Avenue from 66th Street to 86th Street. Call (718) 833-4928 for more information.
3. Scavenger Hunt + BBQ

littlefield in Gowanus for free booze and BBQ. The perfomance space promises a "super festive good time" with a scavenger hunt (starting at 2pm) and djs (going all night long). RSVP
here.
4. If the Fireworks Won't Come to You...

Photo © Barry YanowitzDisappointed that this year's Fourth of July fireworks won't be visible from Brooklyn? For $75, you can hop on a
NY Waterway cruise that'll take you to a viewing spot where you'll be able to see all of the action. The boat will depart from the dock at Fulton Ferry Landing at 7pm (boarding starts at 6pm), and food and drinks will be available on board.
5. Party at the Brooklyn Museum

Photo © semarrFourth of July happens to coincide this year with Brooklyn Museum's monthly Target First Saturday party: Head to the museum for a night of free fun. Themed "America Remix," the
all-night party will include live country, blues, and rock 'n' roll music; free movies; Latin grooves; gallery talks; a dance party; and more.
