Valentine's Day in Brooklyn

By Kristen Goode, About.com

Whether you're single or swooning over someone special, this Valentine's Day in Brooklyn is sure to be sweet. Below you'll find an event to please everyone.

1. A Chocolate Feast

Nothing says Valentine's Day like chocolate, and The Chocolate Room is offering up plenty of it. Head to this sweet spot for a $28 three-course prix fixe menu that consists of, you guessed it, chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate. The price includes wines, and there will be three seatings total: one at 7:30pm, one at 9pm, and one at 10:30pm. Call (718) 783-2900 for reservations.

2. Dinner and a Movie

In Fort Greene, BAM will be serving dinner with a side of culture. The institution will screen a special Valentine's movie, Academy Award-winning Leo McCarey's "The Awful Truth," starring Irene Dunne and Cary Grant. $63 will get you a ticket to the movie, as well as a four-course dinner and champagne. There are two packages: a 6pm screening with an 8:15pm dinner or an 8pm screening with a 6pm dinner. Click here for tickets.

3. Date Number One

This independent film, a comedy about several first dates, is guaranteed to make you smile. If you've ever been on the hunt for romance (and I'm guessing you have), "Date Number One" will probably make you laugh, too. The screening is free and takes place on February 13th at 7pm at Bed-Stuy's Aeon Logic Art Gallery. A party with refreshments will follow. For more information, call (240) 354-3394.

4. Music for Swooning

What better way to spend a Valentine's Day afternoon than by listening to a live performance of some of the world's most popular romantic melodies? Head to the Brooklyn Museum, where the Brooklyn Philharmonic will present "Music for Swooning" from 2pm to 4pm. Tickets are $15. For information, call (718) 488-5913.

5. A Moonlight Ride

This Valentine's Day, cyclists and rollerbladers will gather at Grand Army Plaza at 9pm and then take a sure-to-be-sweet moonlight ride through Prospect Park. If you've never seen the park's wonders in the dark, then you're in for a treat. Plus, the ride is free. For more information, call (212) 802-8222.

6. Champagne and Classical Music

If you're looking for a Valentine's event on the formal side, Bargemusic, Brooklyn's floating concert hall, will be hosting an evening of romantic classical sounds. The show begins at 8pm, and the $60 price tag includes champagne and chocolates. My advice? Make your reservations now; this will be a popular Valentine's pick for New Yorkers from every borough.

7. The Love Hangover Showcase

This annual gathering takes place the day after Valentine's Day and will feature a bevy of musicians from the likes of Guided by Voices, Clem Snide, Belle & Sebastian, Yo La Tengo, and Cat Power. Performers will pair up for a night of love-themed duets that will, according to the Love Hangover press release, "heal broken hearts and break whole ones." Yikes. The show starts at 7:30pm at the Bell House in Gowanus. Tickets are $10.
