1.Find Healthy Brooklyn Restaurants With High Grades in NYC Restaurant Rating
Brooklyn's a food capital, of course, and we boast a ton of terrific restaurants. But taste is one thing, and health is another. Those who have suffered food poisoning after a delicious meal know, sadly, just how true that is. Check the ratings, it's easy to do.
Brooklyn restaurants, along with all restaurants in New York City, are being rated by the New York City Department of Health. As of July 2010, restaurants are required to prominently display these ratings. Here's how to find "A" graded restaurants in Brooklyn, how to read the NYC restaurant ratings, and where to learn more about the New York City Department of Health's grades for restaurants in Brooklyn.
2. What Do the Grades Mean?
The NYC Department of Health scoring system is based on points that are given during health inspections of a restaurant's facilities. The more points, the worse the health practices of that restaurant. Accordingly:
- A equals 0-13 points
- B equals 14-27 points
- C equals 28 or more points
3. How to Find An A Rated Restaurant in Brooklyn
Click onto the NY City Health Department's restaurant report card. On their "Restaurant Information Page" you can search for specific restaurants by name.Or you can plug in your zip code, and get a whole list of restaurants in that area.
Using advanced search, you can mesh cuisine, inspection score, and location.
Better yet, you can map your customized search results.
4. CDC Recommends Checking Health Department Ratings of Restaurants
Here's what the CDC says about avoiding restaurant-related food-borne illness in their online article titled "What can consumers do when they eat in restaurants?". The CDC advises:"You can protect yourself first by choosing which restaurant to patronize. Restaurants are inspected by the local health department to make sure they are clean and have adequate kitchen facilities. Find out how restaurants did on their most recent inspections, and use that score to help guide your choice. In many jurisdictions, the latest inspection score is posted in the restaurant."
The CDC estimates that about 1 out of 6 Americans (or 48 million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases every year.
So don't be a statistic. The next time you eat out, pay attention to the "grade" that restaurant displays in the window.
