Summer in Brooklyn isn't over yet! There are plenty of free concerts and movies (and more) throughout August, and I've tried to give you at least one great event option for nearly every day of the month.

  • Friday, August 1
    Music and Movies: The Charlie Chaplin Mutuals
    UK-based composer Carl Davis, of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, will direct a live orchestra as scores are played to three of Charlie Chaplin's most popular films.

    MonkeyTown Opens Again
    Celebrate the reopening of this art & media house/restaurant with a DVD release party: screenings of Daft Punk's "Electroma" road trip.

  • Saturday, August 2
    The Astroland Archives Photography Project: Back to the Future
    Explore the history behind Astroland at this compelling (and free!) exhibition, which includes photographs and building plans that date back to the 60s, when the futuristic park was first conceived.
    1pm to 6pm (weekends through September 1) at The Coney Island History Project's Exhibition Center under the Cyclone Roller Coaster, 1000 Surf Avenue

  • Sunday, August 3
    African Guitar Festival
    Celebrate all things African with music, food, crafts, and more. This all-day event features an amazing musical lineup, including Oliver Mtukudzi, Yossi Fine, Extra Golden, and others.

  • Monday, August 4
    Insider's Tour of the Brooklyn Bridge Park
    Take a walking tour of the park that (when completed) will stretch for 1.3 miles along Brooklyn's East River waterfront. Tour is free and led by park staffers and architects. Also on August 11.

  • Tuesday, August 5
    Summer Screen at McCarren Park Pool
    This free outdoor movie series runs through August 26. Tonight's film is "Mean Streets."
    Movie begins at dusk at McCarren Park Pool, Lorimer Street between Driggs Avenue and Bayard Street
  • Wednesday, August 6
    Scott McCloud at the Brooklyn Public Library
    Fans of the Zot! comic series won't want to pass up this chance to meet its well-known creator, Scott McCloud. The comic book artist and author will be discussing his work at this free event.
    7pm at the Central Library (Dweck Center), Grand Army Plaza
  • Thursday, August 7
    Movies with a View
    Head outdoors for a free movie under the stars. Tonight's film is "Pleasantville."
    Entertainment begins at 6pm; movie starts at dusk; screening takes place at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park section of Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • Friday, August 8
    Lila Downs in Prospect Park
    Mexican songstress Lila Downs performs for free as part of the annual Celebrate Brooklyn festival. Also playing are The Villa-Lobos Brothers with Grupo Norteño.

  • Saturday, August 9
    Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival
    There will be drinks, music, and food at this all-day dance party. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

    Moonlight Ride through Prospect Park
    Go on a free guided tour of the park and see its wonders in the dark. Bring your own bike or rollerblades.

    Brooklyn Urban Arts Market
    This urban market features up-and-coming artists selling clothing, art, jewelry, and fragrances. The event also features young musicians and more.

  • Monday, August 11
    The Films of Azazel Jacobs
    Today is the first day of BAM's tribute to independent filmmaker Azazel Jacobs. The series runs through August 15 and features the recent Sundance Film Festival entry "Momma’s Man," among other films.

  • Friday, August 15
    Bird Watching for Kids
    Audubon educators will lead this free tour through the park while they teach kids how to use binoculars and identify comon birds. Binoculars will be provided. To register for a spot, call (718) 802-0603 x18.
  • Saturday, August 16
    Universal Hip Hop Parade
    This annual family-friendly event is a celebration of all things hip-hop. Expect to see rappers, break dancers, singers, graffiti artists, and more.
    Begins at 3pm at Marcus Garvey Boulevard between Myrtle and Park Avenues

      Summer Songs and Stories
      If you haven't taken the kids to Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park, then you've been missing out on the fun. Head to the park today for stories, songs, and more.

      "The Exposure Project" Exhibition
      Celebrate the opening night of "The Exposure Project" at Tillie's in Fort Greene. The photo exhibit will be up until Saturday, September 9.
