Guide Review - Tom's Restaurant

Newcomers to Tom's may be skeptical when they see the restaurant for the first time. With its eclectic decorations (think over-the-top holiday lights and random stuffed figurines) and an always-present line of people stretching out the door and around the corner, Tom's may not seem like it's worth a visit.

Trust me, it is.

The wait itself is made bearable by two things: (1) The line moves quickly, and (2) staffers appease everyone waiting by passing out complimentary coffee and cookies.

Once you make it to a table, nothing will matter but the menu in front of you. The restaurant boasts a soda fountain, so order something sweet to tide you over while you decide what to eat. You can either go with fine diner fare like an omelette or an egg sandwich served with home fries, or you can opt for a heaping plate of fluffy pancakes.

With flavors ranging from lemon ricotta to mango walnut, the pancakes are popular for a reason. Served with homemade flavored butters, they're one of the best items on the menu. Light and full of flavor, once you take one bite, you'll be a fan.

It's hard to leave Tom's without at least two staffers asking you if you enjoyed your meal. Like the restaurant itself, the service is old-fashioned, down-to-earth, and truly good. Were this Brooklyn staple open on Sundays, I'd give it five stars.
