Rooftop Films Underground Movies Outdoors showcases different films dates on the tops of roofs in Brooklyn from May to August, 2012< .

  • THURSDAY MAY 31 (Park Slope/Gowanus)
  • Bovines
  • "In the fields, one sees them, wide in grass or grazing peacefully. Large placid animals which one believes to know because they are livestock.”
  • Filmmaker Emmanuel Gras will be in attendance for a Q and A following the screening. After the Q and A there is a reception in courtyard courtesy of Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Radeberger Pilsner

  • Wednesday June 27 (Fort Greene)
  • The Comedy
  • "Tim Heidecker stars in this black comedy about a self-absorbed, filthy-rich, obnoxious hipster, insulting his friends and condescending to strangers, and yet somehow...”
  • Filmmaker Rick Alverson will be in attendance for a Q and A following the screening. After the Q and A there is a reception for all in attendance with complimentary beverages.

  • THE MADNESS OF PRODUCTION: 8 shorts
  • "Rooftop Films and XO Projects' annual INDUSTRIANCE show presents visually astonishing and intellectually stimulating films that examine the changing landscape..." The films include:
  1. IL CAPO (Yuri Ancarani Italy | 15 min.)
    In the marble quarries of the Italian Alps, men and machines dig the mountain. The Chief manages, coordinates and guides quarrymen and heavy-duty machines using a language consisting solely of gestures and signs.
  2. GUANAPE SUR (János Richter | Peru | 23 min.)
    A barren rock island off the coast of Peru. No soil, no water, but hundreds of thousands of birds. For a period of ten years, only two guards may live on Guañape Sur. In the eleventh year, hundreds of workers arrive for the harvest of the birds' excrement.
  3. BIRTHDAY (Jari Vaara | USA | 4 min.)
    In a villainously industrial animated world, little kids can't always get what they want, and need to be prepared for a life of labor.
  4. TRYPPS #6 (MALOBI) (Ben Russell | 10 min.)
    From the Maroon village of Malobi in Suriname, this hypnotic single-take film moves into and out of a mysterious ritual. Deliberately offering no explanation, the film lets the viewer imagine their own meanings. It's Halloween at the Equator, Andrei Tarkovsky for the jungle set.
  5. THE CENTRIFUGE BRAIN PROJECT (Nowak Till | USA | 7 min.)
    The centrifuge brain project is a scientific experiment that started in the 1970s. It involves an amusement park to enhance people's brain capacity. Dr. Laslowicz explains the project.
  6. THURSDAY (Matthias Hoegg | USA | 7 min.)
    The quotidian rituals of a mechanized, uber-orderly animated future begin to break down when a last surviving bit of nature intercedes.
  7. MEANING OF ROBOTS (Matt Lenski | USA | 4 min.)
    Mike Sullivan has been shooting a stop-motion robot sex film in his apartment for the past 10 years. Now his miniature robot porn stars are threatening to squeeze him out of the space he needs to shoot his epic.
  8. JUKU (Kiro Russo | Bolivia | 18 min.)
    About ten thousand people enter daily into Posokoni, the largest tin mine in Bolivia, and make their way into primordial darkness, where mysteries and myths abound.

  • Saturday July 14 (Gowanus)
  • The Argentinean Lesson

  • Filmmaker Wojciech Staron will be in attendance for a Q and A following the screening. After the Q and A there is reception for all in attendance with complimentary beverages.

What is Rooftop Films?

Rooftop Films is a New York City based non-profit organization that seeks to "engage diverse communities by showing independent movies in outdoor locations, producing new films, coordinating youth media education, and renting equipment at low cost to artists."
